Vitamin B9 (Methylfolate)
Vitamin B9, or folate, is an essential water-soluble vitamin that the body cannot synthesise in sufficient quantities. Methylfolate (5-MTHF) is its biologically active form: unlike synthetic folic acid, it is directly usable by cells without prior conversion, making it particularly suitable for individuals with genetic variations affecting the MTHFR enzyme. Vitamin B9 contributes to normal DNA and RNA synthesis, normal amino acid metabolism, and the normal production of blood cells. It also plays a role in cell division and contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system. Requirements increase notably during pregnancy, a period when it contributes to reducing the risk of neural tube defects. Dietary folate is found mainly in green leafy vegetables, legumes, and offal. However, cooking losses and certain physiological or genetic factors can limit effective intake. Methylfolate supplementation offers a targeted option to help meet requirements, especially for those whose conversion of folic acid is reduced.
