Selenium

Selenium is an essential trace element naturally present in soils and found in the diet through foods such as Brazil nuts, whole grains, fish, and meat. The body cannot synthesise it on its own, so it must be obtained through food or, where necessary, through supplementation. This trace element plays a central role in the body's antioxidant defences, particularly as a cofactor for selenoproteins, including glutathione peroxidase, which helps protect cells against oxidative stress. It also contributes to normal thyroid function by participating in the conversion of thyroid hormones, as well as to the maintenance of a normal immune function. Selenium intake can vary significantly depending on the region, due to uneven selenium concentrations in soils. In areas where soils are selenium-poor, dietary intake may be insufficient to meet daily requirements. Supplementation can then help achieve the recommended daily intake and support the physiological functions in which selenium is involved.
