Anionic methacrylate copolymer (Eudraguard® Biotic)

Anionic methacrylate copolymer (marketed under the reference Euroguard® Biotic) is a synthetic polymer of pharmaceutical origin, used as a gastro-resistant coating agent for solid oral forms (capsules, tablets). Its chemical structure makes it insoluble in acidic conditions typical of gastric pH, while allowing progressive dissolution at the neutral to slightly alkaline pH levels found in the small intestine. This property helps protect encapsulated active substances — including probiotics, enzymes, or other sensitive molecules — from degradation by gastric juices and stomach acidity. The coating dissolves at the appropriate site in the digestive tract, contributing to targeted release and improved bioavailability of the active ingredients. In the context of supplementation, this type of coating is particularly relevant when formulated ingredients are fragile or need to reach the intestine in sufficient quantities to exert their effect. It is a technological excipient with no intrinsic biological activity, and its use is governed by European pharmaceutical and food regulations.
