Some mushrooms (shiitake, button mushrooms, porcini) are able to produce vitamin D3 when exposed to sunlight, making them a natural source of vitamin D3. Some seaweeds, such as red algae, also contain it: this is the source we use for our Vegan Vitamin D3.

What is vitamin D?

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, stored in the liver, skin, kidneys, spleen, muscles and adipose tissue. It is naturally produced by the body with sufficient sun exposure (the sunshine vitamin). It is also found in food, such as oily fish, eggs and dairy products.

What are the signs of a vitamin D deficiency?

Children and older adults have higher vitamin D needs. The effects of a deficiency include muscle and bone weakness, general fatigue and mood variations. The causes are usually too little sun exposure and insufficient dietary intake.
