Probiotics are among the living micro-organisms naturally present in our gut. This ensemble (made up of lactic bacteria, viruses, parasites and non-pathogenic fungi) is called the gut microbiota. It plays many roles in our well-being, such as in the balance of our intestinal flora. Probiotics come in different strains, each with specific properties that can help support various aspects of the intestinal and general system. Probiotics differ from prebiotics, which are beneficial to the bacteria already present in our body.
Elie Metchnikoff, professor of microbiology and researcher at the Pasteur Institute, was the first to suggest that lactic acid bacteria could be beneficial for intestinal comfort. He later received the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1908 for his work on the link between gut bacteria and the immune system. In 1965, American researchers Lilly and Stillwell introduced the term 'probiotic' for the first time, defining it as factors derived from micro-organisms that stimulate the growth of other organisms. The effectiveness of probiotics in maintaining the balance of the intestinal flora and their positive impact on the digestive system have become major research topics over the years.
An imbalance in the gut microbiota can result in irregular transit (bloating), unusual fatigue and mood variations (stress, anxiety). Maintaining a balance of various probiotic strains can help prevent these imbalances and support optimal intestinal well-being.
Scientific studies have shown that the intestinal flora could play a role in weight management, since it is involved in the regulation of metabolism and the absorption of nutrients. However, it should be noted that research is still ongoing to confirm or refute its effectiveness on these points.
Probiotics contribute to the balance of the intestinal flora, which on its own represents several billion living micro-organisms. A balanced intestinal flora, including various probiotic strains, is essential for our comfort, as it plays a role in the proper functioning of digestion and nutrient absorption. Prebiotics, non-digestible substances that feed probiotics, can also support this balance by promoting the growth and activity of beneficial probiotics.
Probiotics are naturally present in our diet. They are found in dairy products (yoghurt, cottage cheese, skyr, roquefort), fermented drinks (kefir, kombucha), fermented soy products (tempeh, miso), sauerkraut, as well as fermented fruits and vegetables (olives, gherkins, kimchi). Incorporating these dietary probiotics into a balanced diet helps promote a healthy intestinal flora and support digestive comfort.
