L-tryptophan was identified in the early 20th century among the essential amino acids, those the body cannot synthesise and that must be provided through diet. It has since been widely studied as a precursor of serotonin and offered as a food supplement, today often obtained by fermentation of plant materials such as corn.
L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid: the body cannot make it, so it must come from the diet. It is found naturally in plant and animal proteins. It is the precursor of serotonin. Our L-tryptophan is 100% plant-based, from corn fermentation, and dosed at 220 mg per tablet.
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter involved in regulating mood, appetite and sleep. An imbalance may come with more fluctuating mood, increased craving for sugar or less restful sleep. These signs are not specific: if discomfort persists, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional.
Serotonin is not directly provided by food: it is synthesised by the body from L-tryptophan, an amino acid present in the diet. Eating sources of tryptophan, together with a balanced diet and enough daylight exposure, supports this pathway.
L-tryptophan is found in protein-rich foods: legumes, nuts and seeds, whole grains, eggs, dairy, poultry and fish. A varied and balanced diet generally covers tryptophan intake.
At usual doses, L-tryptophan is generally well tolerated. In some sensitive people, mild digestive discomfort or drowsiness remains possible. This product is for adults only; it should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, if taking antidepressants or in case of kidney failure. If you are on medication or in doubt, ask your doctor for advice.
