Griffonia is a flowering plant in the legume family, the Fabaceae. The best-known species of this genus is griffonia simplicifolia, native to West and Central Africa. Griffonia simplicifolia is particularly interesting for the central nervous system because it contains a compound called 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan), which is a precursor of serotonin. Because of its ability to raise serotonin levels in the brain, 5-HTP has been studied for anxiety, stress and weight loss.
A serotonin deficiency can lead to a whole range of clinical signs and symptoms. Here are some of the most common signs of a serotonin deficiency on health: anxiety, sleep problems, headaches or intestinal disorders.
Griffonia simplicifolia is a woody plant native to West Africa, mainly found in countries such as Ghana, Ivory Coast, Togo and Burkina Faso. It is valued for its seeds rich in 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), a natural precursor of serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter involved in many biological processes, including the regulation of mood, sleep and appetite. Because of this connection with serotonin, Griffonia simplicifolia has attracted the interest of researchers and herbalists as a potential food supplement. The use of Griffonia simplicifolia as a food supplement began to gain popularity in the 1990s. Scientific studies have suggested that taking 5-HTP supplements could potentially raise serotonin levels in the brain, which could have beneficial effects on certain conditions such as anxiety and sleep disorders.
Griffonia helps regulate the brain's serotonin level, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in appetite. A serotonin deficiency can lead to a dysfunction of the feeling of satiety and negatively affect cravings and sugar cravings.
To date there is not enough data on the use of griffonia during pregnancy or breastfeeding. As a result, it is not recommended for pregnant and/or breastfeeding women to take griffonia.
It is recommended not to take griffonia with other plants that raise serotonin levels in the brain, such as valerian or St. John's wort. If in doubt, do not hesitate to seek the advice of a health professional.
Taking griffonia does not cause side effects if the dosage is correctly respected. In case of overdose, nausea, intestinal disorders and dizziness may occur. That said, everyone's body is unique and reacts differently to food supplements. We strongly recommend that you consult your doctor before starting a new routine and that you find out about potential interactions if you take prescription medication.
