Clinical efficacy
Also known as Indian frankincense, boswellia serrata is a plant native to India and the arid regions of Africa. It has been used for centuries for its many traditional properties. The first scientific studies exploring the properties of boswellia date back to the early 2000s.
The active compounds of boswellia serrata are contained in its resin, notably the boswellic acids. The use of boswellia is traditionally associated with gastrointestinal and digestive wellbeing. It may also be suggested for people looking to support better joint elasticity.
Pregnant women are advised to refrain from using it. In addition, the use of this plant, whether in the form of capsules, tablets or essential oils, is not recommended for breastfeeding women or children under 12 years old. We recommend seeking your doctor's advice before starting any supplementation.
Boswellia resin can have a slightly bitter, resinous and earthy taste, with astringent notes. The taste can vary depending on the variety and the form in which it is consumed. Boswellia capsules are a suitable form to avoid this taste, which some find unpleasant.
Side effects from taking boswellia are rare, generally mild and short-lived when they occur. They may include nausea, heartburn or gas, and more rarely, allergic skin reactions. Boswellia may interact with certain medications, particularly anticoagulants and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). We strongly recommend seeking your doctor's advice before starting any new routine and checking for potential interactions if you are taking prescription medication.
