Vitamin B5
Vitamin B5, also known as pantothenic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin naturally found in a wide variety of foods of animal and plant origin, including meat, eggs, legumes and whole grains. It is commonly used in supplements in the form of calcium D-pantothenate, a stable and well-absorbed salt. Pantothenic acid plays a central role in energy metabolism: it contributes to the synthesis of coenzyme A, a molecule essential for converting carbohydrates, fats and proteins into energy that can be used by cells. It also contributes to normal mental performance and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue by supporting normal energy-yielding metabolism in the brain. Although severe vitamin B5 deficiencies are rare, insufficient intakes can occur in cases of restrictive diets or increased needs. Supplementation can then help meet daily requirements and support the physiological processes in which this vitamin is involved.
