Vitamine A
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin found naturally in food in two main forms: retinol, of animal origin (liver, dairy products, eggs), and provitamin carotenoids, notably beta-carotene, which the body converts into active vitamin A from plant sources (carrots, spinach, sweet potato). It contributes to the maintenance of normal vision, particularly in low-light conditions, and plays a role in the functioning of the immune system as well as in cell differentiation processes. It also participates in maintaining skin and mucous membranes in a normal condition. A varied diet generally covers vitamin A requirements, but certain populations — restrictive diets, malabsorption issues, increased needs — may have insufficient intakes. Targeted supplementation can then help bridge these gaps, within the recommended daily doses, as vitamin A is stored in the liver and can accumulate with excessive intakes.
