Tomato extract (Solanum lycopersicum)

Tomato extract is derived from the fruit of Solanum lycopersicum, a plant native to South America that is now cultivated worldwide. It is notably rich in lycopene, a fat-soluble carotenoid pigment responsible for the tomato's characteristic red colour. Standardised extracts provide lycopene concentrations far higher than those obtained through fresh fruit consumption alone. Lycopene is recognised for its antioxidant properties: it contributes to neutralising free radicals and limiting cellular oxidative stress. Scientific data also suggest that it contributes to maintaining normal prostate function and supporting cardiovascular health. Other compounds found in the extract, such as phytoene and phytofluene, also play a role in these effects. Tomato extract supplementation is of particular interest for individuals whose diet is low in colourful fruits and vegetables, or whose antioxidant requirements are increased. The bioavailability of lycopene is enhanced in the presence of dietary fats, a factor taken into account in the formulation of food supplements.
