Taurine
Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid naturally found in the body, particularly in muscles, the brain, the heart, and the retina. Unlike most amino acids, it is not incorporated into proteins, but plays a structural and functional role in numerous tissues. It is obtained through diet, mainly from meat and fish, and can also be synthesised in small amounts by the body from methionine and cysteine. Taurine contributes to regulating cellular hydration and mineral balance, supporting normal cardiac function, and protecting cells against oxidative stress. It also plays a role in nerve transmission and in bile acid metabolism, thereby contributing to lipid digestion. Taurine requirements may be higher in athletes, individuals under intense stress, or those whose diet is low in animal proteins. Supplementation may help maintain adequate intake when endogenous synthesis and dietary supply prove insufficient.
