Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis)
Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) is a blue-green microalgae cultivated in alkaline freshwater environments, particularly in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Consumed for centuries by certain populations, it is now recognised as one of the most nutrient-dense foods available, providing 55–70% complete protein (including all essential amino acids), highly bioavailable iron, partial vitamin B12, carotenoids (beta-carotene, zeaxanthin), and phycocyanin, a blue pigment with documented antioxidant properties. Spiruline contributes to reducing tiredness and fatigue and supports normal energy metabolism, largely due to its iron and B-vitamin content. It also contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress and to the normal functioning of the immune system. Spiruline supplementation is particularly relevant for people with restricted diets (vegetarian or vegan), athletes, or anyone looking to effectively complement their daily intake of protein, iron, and antioxidants.
