Magnesium salts of fatty acids
Magnesium salts of fatty acids are compounds obtained by chemically bonding magnesium with fatty acids derived from vegetable fats, such as stearic acid. They belong to the family of metal salts of fatty acids and typically appear as a white to off-white powder with low water solubility. In the dietary supplement industry, they are primarily used as excipients for technological purposes: they act as anti-caking agents, lubricants, emulsifiers, or coating agents. These properties help improve powder flow during the manufacture of capsules or tablets, prevent materials from adhering to industrial equipment, and ensure optimal homogeneity of the finished product. Although they contain magnesium in their structure, their contribution to the daily intake of this mineral is negligible, as their role remains exclusively functional. Their use is governed by European regulations on food additives, where they are listed under code E470b. They are generally well tolerated at the doses used in standard formulations.
