Magnesium salts of fatty acids

Magnesium salts of fatty acids are compounds obtained by chemically binding magnesium to fatty acids derived from vegetable fats, most commonly of palmitic or stearic origin. They typically appear as a white powder and are widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries as functional additives, particularly as emulsifiers, stabilisers, coating agents, or anti-caking agents during the manufacture of tablets and capsules. In this context, they primarily serve a technological role: they facilitate the compression of powders, prevent adhesion to production equipment, and contribute to the homogeneity of formulations. Their presence in a dietary supplement is therefore linked to the manufacturing process of the finished product rather than to any direct nutritional effect. The quantities of magnesium salts of fatty acids used in dietary supplements remain very small and are regulated under European legislation. They are considered well tolerated at these levels, and their use helps ensure the quality, stability, and consistency of solid dosage forms.
