Lactase

Lactase is a digestive enzyme naturally produced by the cells lining the small intestine. Its role is to break down lactose — the sugar found in milk and dairy products — into two simple sugars, glucose and galactose, so they can be absorbed by the body. Without sufficient lactase activity, undigested lactose ferments in the colon, leading to digestive discomfort such as bloating, cramps, or diarrhoea. Lactase production tends to decline naturally with age in a large proportion of the world's population, a phenomenon known as hypolactasia. This reduction in enzymatic activity underlies lactose intolerance, whose prevalence varies widely depending on population and geographical origin. Lactase supplementation contributes to the digestion of lactose in individuals with reduced enzymatic activity. Taken at mealtimes alongside dairy-containing foods, it helps limit the digestive symptoms associated with poor lactose absorption, supporting a varied diet without discomfort.
