Hop extract (Humulus lupulus)

Hops (Humulus lupulus) is a perennial climbing plant of the Cannabaceae family, native to the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The female cones are primarily used, as they are rich in active compounds such as flavonoids, essential oils, and two notable phytoestrogens: 8-prenylnaringenin and 2-methylbut-3-en-2-ol. These molecules have been the subject of extensive phytotherapy research. The best-documented properties of hop extract relate to the nervous system and sleep. It contributes to reducing agitation and nervousness, and helps promote a more restful onset of sleep. Often combined with valerian or lemon balm in herbal formulations, it acts synergistically with other calming plants. Data also suggest an effect on female hormonal balance, linked to its phytoestrogenic compounds. Supplementation with standardised hop extract provides reproducible concentrations of active ingredients that are difficult to achieve through dietary intake alone. It is particularly suited to individuals looking to support sleep quality or help manage occasional stress, as part of an appropriate lifestyle.
