Griffonia seed extract (Griffonia simplicifolia)
Griffonia (Griffonia simplicifolia) is a woody plant native to West and Central Africa. Its seeds are a naturally concentrated source of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), a non-proteinogenic amino acid found only in trace amounts in common foods. 5-HTP is a direct precursor of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that contributes to the regulation of mood, eating behaviour and sleep-wake cycles. Unlike tryptophan, 5-HTP readily crosses the blood-brain barrier, giving it favourable cerebral bioavailability. The serotonin produced is itself a precursor of melatonin, the hormone involved in sleep quality. Supplementation with standardised griffonia seed extract provides a practical option for individuals looking to support emotional balance, normal appetite or satisfactory sleep quality, particularly when dietary tryptophan intake proves insufficient.
