Glycerin monostearate

Glycerol monostearate, also known as E471, is an ester derived from the combination of glycerol and stearic acid, both sourced from vegetable oils. It typically appears as a white powder or flakes and belongs to the monoglyceride family. Thanks to its amphiphilic chemical structure — simultaneously hydrophilic and lipophilic — it is recognised for its emulsifying properties, promoting the homogeneous blending of aqueous and fatty phases. It also acts as a coating agent and gelling agent, contributing to the stability of the formulations in which it is incorporated. Its antioxidant properties help preserve ingredients sensitive to oxidation, and it can serve as a carrier for colourants. In the field of food supplements, glycerol monostearate is primarily used as a technological excipient. It helps ensure the homogeneity, stability, and structural integrity of galenic forms such as capsules and tablets, without altering the nature of the active ingredients it accompanies.
