Fish
Fish is a food of marine or freshwater origin that has been consumed for millennia across all world cultures. It is a natural source of complete proteins, long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamin D and vitamin A, and essential minerals including iodine, selenium and zinc. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish contribute to the normal function of the heart and normal brain function. DHA in particular contributes to the maintenance of normal vision. Iodine and selenium, naturally present in marine fish, contribute to normal thyroid function and to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. In the context of a modern diet often low in oily fish, supplementation with fish oil or fish protein concentrates can help cover daily requirements for specific nutrients, particularly omega-3 fatty acids, for which average intakes frequently fall below nutritional recommendations.
