D-alpha tocophérol
D-alpha tocopherol is the natural form of vitamin E, a fat-soluble vitamin found in many vegetable oils, nuts and seeds. It is the most biologically active isomer among the eight existing forms of vitamin E, which sets it apart from its synthetic counterpart (DL-alpha tocopherol). As a major antioxidant, D-alpha tocopherol contributes to protecting cells against oxidative stress, a process involved in cellular ageing and the deterioration of membrane lipids. It also contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system and to the protection of the body's polyunsaturated fatty acids from oxidation. Vitamin E intake can be insufficient in certain situations, particularly when following a low-fat diet or when needs are increased. Supplementation with D-alpha tocopherol in its natural form offers greater bioavailability than the synthetic form, making it a preferred option for meeting vitamin E requirements.
