Bromelain

Bromelain is a plant-based enzymatic complex extracted primarily from the stem and fruit of the pineapple plant (Ananas comosus). It belongs to the protease family — enzymes capable of breaking down proteins into peptides and amino acids. The stem of the plant contains the highest concentration of active enzymes, making it the preferred source for supplementation-grade extracts. Bromelain has been studied for several documented properties: it contributes to the digestion of dietary proteins and is also associated with effects on the body's normal inflammatory processes. Research has explored its potential role in supporting muscle recovery after physical exertion, as well as its action on general digestive comfort. Supplementation with bromelain is of interest when dietary intake is insufficient or when needs are temporarily increased, particularly during periods of intense physical activity or digestive discomfort. Standardised extracts ensure a precise and reproducible enzymatic concentration, which cannot be achieved through the simple consumption of fresh pineapple.
