Biotine
Biotin, also known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H, is a water-soluble B-group vitamin. It is naturally found in many foods — eggs, liver, legumes, and nuts — and is also synthesised in small amounts by the gut microbiota. It acts as an essential cofactor for several enzymes involved in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism, thereby contributing to cellular energy production. Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, normal nails, and normal skin, according to health claims recognised by the EFSA. It also supports the normal functioning of the nervous system and normal psychological function, making it a nutrient of particular interest for skin and hair well-being. Although severe deficiencies are rare in the general population, insufficient intakes can occur during restrictive diets, pregnancy, or with regular consumption of raw eggs. Biotin supplementation helps ensure adequate intake when diet alone is not sufficient to meet daily requirements.
