Activated carbon

Activated charcoal is a form of carbon processed at high temperatures in the presence of steam or oxidising gases, giving it a microporous structure with an exceptionally large adsorption surface area. Of plant origin — typically derived from wood, coconut shells or peat — it has long been used in medicine for its adsorbing properties within the digestive system. Thanks to its porosity, activated charcoal is able to trap intestinal gases and certain unwanted substances present in the digestive tract, thereby contributing to a reduction in bloating and abdominal discomfort. Clinical studies show that it helps reduce the production and accumulation of gas in the intestine, particularly after meals rich in fermentable foods. Activated charcoal supplementation is especially relevant for people prone to flatulence, recurring bloating or occasional digestive discomfort. It is generally recommended to take it away from meals and other supplements or medications, as its non-selective adsorbing capacity may reduce their absorption.
