Polyéthylène glycol (PEG)
Polyethylene glycol, commonly abbreviated as PEG, is a synthetic polymer derived from ethylene oxide. Depending on its molecular weight, it appears as a viscous liquid or a waxy solid, and is widely used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries. In dietary supplements, it is primarily used as an excipient — a bulking agent, binder, or lubricant that facilitates the manufacturing of tablets and capsules. PEG is well known for its good digestive tolerability and low biological reactivity. At high molecular weights, it is used as an osmotic laxative in regulated medical preparations, as it helps retain water in the intestine and supports bowel transit. In the context of dietary supplements, PEG is present in very small amounts as a technological excipient. Its use is governed by European regulations, which set acceptable daily intake levels. It has no nutritional properties of its own, but contributes to the galenical quality and stability of formulations.
