Vitamin B9 (folic acid)
Vitamin B9, also known as folic acid in its synthetic form or folate in its natural form, is a water-soluble B-group vitamin. It is found mainly in green leafy vegetables, legumes, offal and citrus fruits. The body cannot synthesise it on its own, making dietary intake essential. Vitamin B9 plays a central role in DNA synthesis and cell division. It contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells, supporting oxygen transport in the blood and helping to reduce tiredness and fatigue. It is also involved in amino acid metabolism and normal psychological function. Needs for vitamin B9 are particularly high during certain life stages, especially for pregnant women or women of childbearing age, owing to its role in foetal nervous system development. An unbalanced diet, regular alcohol consumption or certain medications can reduce intake. Supplementation offers a targeted and consistent way to meet these needs.
