Vegan Taurine
Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid derivative that is naturally present in the human body as well as in the tissues of many animals. It is synthesised endogenously, primarily from cysteine and methionine, and can also be obtained through the diet, particularly from animal-based foods such as meat and seafood. Physiologically, taurine is involved in a wide range of essential mechanisms. It acts as a neuromodulator within the central nervous system, where it contributes to the regulation of neuronal excitability. It also plays a role in cardiovascular function, particularly by contributing to cardiac muscle contractility, as well as in muscle function and the regulation of bile acid metabolism. Although the body is capable of synthesising taurine, certain situations — such as a strictly plant-based diet, intense physical activity, or increased physiological demands — may limit the amounts available. Vegan taurine supplementation, obtained through fermentation or synthesis without the use of animal-derived raw materials, provides a suitable way to meet these needs for people following vegetarian or vegan diets.
