Passionflower extract
Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is a climbing plant native to the southeastern United States and Mexico. Its aerial parts — leaves, stems and flowers — have been used in herbal medicine for several centuries, first by Native American peoples and later incorporated into European traditional medicine from the 17th century onwards. The plant contains flavonoids, including chrysin and orientin, as well as indole alkaloids and phenolic acids. These compounds are associated with calming effects: passionflower contributes to reducing temporary nervous tension and to promoting restful sleep. It is thought to act partly by modulating the activity of GABA receptors, which are involved in the regulation of anxiety. Supplementation with a standardised passionflower extract provides a consistent and reproducible concentration of active compounds, unlike preparations made from the whole plant. It is particularly suited to those looking to support their daily nervous balance or improve the time it takes to fall asleep, as part of a healthy lifestyle.
