Lactobacillus plantarum
Lactobacillus plantarum is a lactic acid bacterium belonging to the Lactobacillaceae family. Naturally found in a wide range of environments — on plants, in fermented foods such as sauerkraut and olives, as well as in the human digestive tract and oral cavity — it is one of the most extensively studied probiotic strains to date. This bacterium stands out for its ability to withstand gastric acidity and bile salts, allowing it to reach the intestine while remaining viable. It contributes to the balance of the gut microbiota, the integrity of the intestinal barrier, and the maintenance of a healthy digestive environment. Research also suggests that it plays a role in supporting immune defences, given that a large part of immunity is linked to the gut. Supplementing with Lactobacillus plantarum is of particular interest for individuals whose microbiota has been compromised — by an unbalanced diet, antibiotic use, or stress. Taking this strain as a dietary supplement ensures a controlled quantity and viability that can be difficult to guarantee through diet alone.
