Bacopa (Bacopa monnieri)
Bacopa monnieri is a small, creeping perennial plant native to the wetlands of South Asia, particularly India, where it grows naturally along riverbanks and ponds. Recognisable by its fleshy leaves and small white flowers, it has held a central place in Ayurvedic medicine for millennia under the name Brahmi. Bacopa leaves contain characteristic active compounds called bacosides, to which most of its properties are attributed. Studies suggest that these molecules contribute to the maintenance of cognitive functions, including memory, concentration and information processing speed. Bacopa is also studied for its adaptogenic role, contributing to helping the body cope with occasional stress. Supplementation with standardised Bacopa extract is particularly relevant for people looking to support their mental performance on a daily basis, especially during periods of intense intellectual demand. As the effects are gradual, regular intake over several weeks is generally recommended to experience the benefits.
