Lion's mane

Lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus) is a medicinal mushroom native to Asia, Europe and North America, easily recognised by its long white cascading spines that resemble a lion's mane. Used for centuries in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine, it is now studied for its bioactive compounds — particularly hericenones and erinacines — which are thought to cross the blood-brain barrier. These molecules contribute to stimulating the synthesis of nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein essential for the maintenance and regeneration of neurons. Research suggests that Lion's mane contributes to supporting cognitive function, focus and mental clarity. It is also investigated for its role in general well-being and stress resilience. Supplementation with Lion's mane is of particular interest for those looking to support their cognitive performance on a daily basis, especially during periods of intense mental fatigue. Standardised extracts rich in active compounds offer more reliable potency than plain dried mushroom powder.
