L-théanine

L-theanine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid found naturally in the leaves of green tea (Camellia sinensis) and, to a lesser extent, in certain mushrooms. It is primarily responsible for the characteristic umami flavour of tea and is one of the most studied active compounds in this plant. Research suggests that L-theanine contributes to promoting a state of relaxation without causing drowsiness, notably by modulating the activity of certain neurotransmitters such as GABA, dopamine, and serotonin. It is also associated with improved focus and a reduction in the perception of occasional stress. When combined with caffeine, it contributes to supporting cognitive performance in a balanced way. Although green tea is its main dietary source, the amounts obtained through regular consumption can vary considerably. L-theanine supplementation provides a standardised and reproducible intake, which is particularly relevant for individuals looking to support their daily sense of calm and mental clarity.
