Turmeric rhizome extract (Curcuma longa)

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a rhizomatous plant native to the Indian subcontinent, cultivated for thousands of years for its culinary and traditional uses. Turmeric rhizome extract is standardised in curcuminoids — primarily curcumin —, the active compounds to which most of the studied properties are attributed. Curcumin is recognised for its antioxidant activity: it contributes to neutralising free radicals and reducing cellular oxidative stress. A large body of scientific research has also examined its role in supporting the body's natural inflammatory response, making it a particularly well-studied ingredient for joint comfort and the maintenance of everyday joint flexibility. Since curcumin's natural bioavailability is limited, extracts used in supplementation are often formulated with absorption-enhancing agents such as piperine from black pepper. A standardised turmeric extract supplement can therefore be a practical way to reach curcuminoid intakes that are difficult to achieve through diet alone.
