Licaps® capsule (fish gelatin, water)

The Licaps® capsule is a liquid-filled hard capsule format developed by Capsugel (now Lonza), designed to encapsulate liquid or semi-liquid active ingredients. It is made from marine-origin gelatin, derived from fish skin, and water. This marine source makes it a suitable alternative to bovine or porcine gelatin capsules for people with specific dietary or religious restrictions. Fish gelatin offers good bioavailability and adequate stability under standard storage conditions. The Licaps® technology enables hot-fill manufacturing of liquid formulas, which promotes rapid dispersion of actives after ingestion and may support their absorption by the body. In the context of supplementation, this type of capsule contributes to preserving the stability of ingredients that are sensitive to oxidation or moisture. It is a functional excipient whose primary role is to ensure the integrity and proper delivery of the actives it contains, without providing any nutritional property of its own.
