Chromium Picolinate

Chromium picolinate is a chelated form of chromium, a trace mineral naturally found in foods such as whole grains, meat, and broccoli. It is formed by binding trivalent chromium (Cr³⁺) with picolinic acid, a derivative of tryptophan. This combination significantly enhances intestinal absorption of the mineral, making it the most bioavailable form of chromium used in supplementation. Chromium contributes to the normal metabolism of macronutrients, particularly carbohydrates. It plays a role in maintaining normal blood glucose levels by supporting the action of insulin, the hormone responsible for regulating blood sugar. This property is recognised by an authorised health claim in Europe. Dietary chromium intake may be insufficient in the context of a modern diet, especially with high consumption of refined sugars, which promote its renal elimination. Supplementation with chromium picolinate can therefore help meet daily requirements and support normal carbohydrate metabolism.
