Dunaliella Salina seaweed extract
Dunaliella salina is a unicellular green microalgae belonging to the Dunaliellaceae family. A quintessential halophilic organism, it thrives in hypersaline environments such as salt marshes and coastal lagoons, particularly along the Australian, Israeli and Mediterranean coastlines. To survive these extreme conditions, it synthesises large amounts of carotenoids, especially beta-carotene, making it one of the most concentrated natural sources of this compound in the world. The carotenoids found in Dunaliella salina include several beta-carotene isomers as well as lutein, zeaxanthin and alpha-carotene. These compounds are recognised for their antioxidant properties: they contribute to neutralising free radicals and help protect cells against oxidative stress. Beta-carotene is also a precursor of vitamin A, which contributes to the maintenance of normal vision, normal skin and the normal functioning of the immune system. Dunaliella salina extract is used as a supplement as a natural source of beta-carotene, offering a more diverse carotenoid profile than synthetic beta-carotene. This molecular complexity is frequently cited to highlight the value of supplementation in the form of a standardised extract.
