Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3, or cholecalciferol, is the natural form of vitamin D synthesised by the skin upon exposure to ultraviolet rays. It is also found in small amounts in certain animal-based foods, such as fatty fish and egg yolk. As a fat-soluble vitamin, it is stored in adipose tissue and the liver. Vitamin D3 plays a central role in calcium and phosphorus metabolism: it contributes to the normal intestinal absorption of these minerals, thereby supporting the maintenance of normal bones and teeth. It also contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system and the maintenance of normal muscle function. Due to often insufficient sun exposure — particularly in winter or at temperate latitudes — and naturally limited dietary intake, a large share of the population has suboptimal vitamin D levels. Supplementing with vitamin D3 helps meet the body's requirements when cutaneous synthesis and dietary intake are not sufficient.
