Selenomethionine

Selenomethionine is the organic form of selenium, an essential trace element that the body cannot synthesise on its own. It is formed by binding selenium to methionine, an amino acid naturally found in food. This chelated form is recognised for its high bioavailability, meaning it is more readily absorbed and stored by body tissues than inorganic forms such as selenite or selenate. Selenium contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress, particularly as a component of selenoproteins such as glutathione peroxidase. It also contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system, normal spermatogenesis, the maintenance of normal thyroid function, and the maintenance of normal hair and nails. Dietary selenium intakes vary widely around the world, with European soils being relatively low in this mineral. Supplementation with selenomethionine can help meet recommended daily requirements, particularly for individuals with a limited diet or increased needs.
