Trace of milk

A milk trace refers to the residual presence of proteins or components derived from cow's milk (or other mammals) in a product, generally at trace levels, without milk being an intentionally added ingredient. This presence typically results from cross-contamination during manufacturing or packaging in shared facilities. From a nutritional standpoint, milk traces may contain proteins such as casein or lactalbumin, as well as minimal amounts of lactose. For the vast majority of consumers, these quantities have no notable impact. However, they are of particular relevance to individuals with cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) or a documented hypersensitivity, for whom even minimal exposure may trigger a reaction. The labelling of milk traces is mandatory on food supplements under European allergen regulations (EU Regulation No. 1169/2011). This disclosure helps inform concerned consumers and enables informed decision-making. People with known allergies or intolerances are advised to consult a healthcare professional before starting any supplementation.
