Vitamin B9

Vitamin B9, also known as folic acid or folate, is a water-soluble B-group vitamin naturally found in foods such as leafy green vegetables, legumes and citrus fruits. It plays a central role in DNA synthesis and cell division, making it a particularly important nutrient during periods of rapid growth. Physiologically, vitamin B9 contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and to the proper functioning of homocysteine metabolism. It also supports normal psychological function and helps reduce fatigue. Its involvement in amino acid and nucleic acid synthesis makes it a key contributor to normal immune system function. Folate intake can be insufficient in certain situations, particularly when the diet lacks variety or when nutritional needs are increased. Vitamin B9 supplementation helps meet these needs and maintain adequate levels, especially when diet alone does not ensure optimal intake.
