Vitamin B8 (D-biotin)

Vitamin B8, also known as biotin or D-biotin, is a water-soluble B-group vitamin found naturally in many foods, including eggs, liver, legumes, nuts and certain cereals. It is also synthesised in small amounts by the gut microbiota, although dietary intake remains the primary source and varies between individuals. Biotin acts as an essential cofactor for several enzymes, particularly carboxylases involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. It contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism and plays a role in fatty acid synthesis and amino acid catabolism. It also supports the normal functioning of the nervous system. Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, skin and mucous membranes. Although deficiency is uncommon in the general population, it can occur in specific situations — regular consumption of raw eggs, pregnancy, or very restrictive diets. In such cases, supplementation can help meet daily requirements and maintain adequate intake.
