Zinc

Zinc is an essential trace element that the body cannot synthesise and must therefore obtain through diet. It is found mainly in oysters, red meat, legumes and seeds. Although present in only minute quantities in the body, it is involved in more than 300 enzymatic reactions and plays a central role in many biological functions. Its antioxidant properties help protect cells against oxidative stress. Zinc also contributes to the maintenance of normal skin, nail health and hair vitality, by supporting cell renewal processes in the scalp. In addition, zinc contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system and the maintenance of normal vision. Dietary intake may be insufficient in certain populations, including vegetarians, older adults and individuals under intense physical stress. Supplementation can then help meet daily requirements and maintain adequate levels in the body.
